Pen Kalamkaari is an exquisite art of painted in fabrics. This could very well be one of the most ancient crafts to have flourished in India. The word is derived from the Persian words ghalam (pen) and kari (craftsmanship), meaning drawing with a pen (Ghalamkar). Evolved through trial and error for more than 3000 years, the craft has been passed on as legacy within families from generation to generation.
In India there are two types of kalamkari art. One, the Srikalahasti style and the other, the Machilipatnam style of art. Both styles are exemplary. When the former style exhibits Persian influence the later predominantly features Indian temples. Except the major difference in painting procedure, the entire steps involves in Kalamkaari in both styles are same. Painting is done using blocks in machilipatnam style whereas painting is done by using kalam in Srikalahasti style.
